What Is Selank

What Is Selank

What is Selank?

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide originally developed in Russia for treating generalized anxiety disorder. Its based on a natural immune-modulating peptide called tuftsin, with structural changes that make it last longer and cross the blood-brain barrier. Selank produces a calm, focused mental state without sedation, without the addictiveness of benzodiazepines, and without cognitive impairment. Used clinically in Russia since 2009; researched globally for anxiety, attention, and immune function.

The whole point of Selank was building an anxiolytic peptide that didnt have the drawbacks of benzos: no sedation, no dependence, no tolerance build-up, no withdrawal. Russian clinical data suggests it largely delivers on that.

How does Selank work?

  • GABA modulation: Increases expression of GABA-receptor mRNA and enhances inhibitory tone, producing the calm without binding directly to benzo sites
  • Serotonin and dopamine balance: Mild upregulation of both, contributing to mood lift and focus
  • BDNF increase: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor goes up, supporting neuroplasticity and learning
  • Enkephalin enhancement: Boosts endogenous opioid peptides, contributing to anti-anxiety effect
  • Immune modulation: Tuftsin-derived structure interacts with immune cells, mild immune support effect

The mechanism is fundamentally different from a benzodiazepine. Benzos directly bind GABA-A and force the chloride channel open. Selank works upstream by modulating expression and balance, so the effect is gentler and the rebound risk is much lower.

What does Selank do?

  • Anxiety reduction – the primary indication. Calms without sedation.
  • Focus and attention – users report clearer thinking, less mental clutter
  • Stress resilience – reduces the magnitude of stress response
  • Mood lift – mild antidepressant effect, less pronounced than the anti-anxiety effect
  • Memory and learning – small studies show improved memory consolidation
  • Sleep quality – indirect benefit from reduced anxiety

The typical user experience is described as taking the edge off without numbing. Productivity often goes up rather than down.

How is Selank administered?

  • Nasal spray (most common): Standard formulation. 250-500 mcg per dose, 1-3 times daily.
  • Subcutaneous injection: Less common but allows higher bioavailability. 100-300 mcg per dose.
  • Oral: Not effective. Selank is destroyed by stomach acid.

Nasal is preferred because Selank crosses from the nasal mucosa straight into the bloodstream and brain, bypassing first-pass metabolism. See our reconstitution guide for prep details.

How fast does Selank work?

  • Onset: 10-20 minutes after nasal dose
  • Peak effect: 30-60 minutes
  • Duration: 4-6 hours per dose
  • Cumulative effect: Many users report stronger anxiolytic effect after 7-14 days of consistent use

Single doses work for acute situations. Chronic use builds a baseline reduction in anxiety over 2-4 weeks.

Selank vs Semax: what is the difference?

Selank and Semax are both Russian heptapeptides, both nasal sprays. They feel different.

  • Selank: Calm focus, anxiety reduction, gentle mood lift. Better for stress and worry.
  • Semax: Stimulant focus, cognitive enhancement, BDNF boost. Better for productivity and learning.
  • Stacking: Many users alternate or combine for balanced effect.

Selank vs benzodiazepines

  • Mechanism: Selank modulates GABA expression. Benzos directly bind GABA-A.
  • Sedation: Selank doesnt sedate. Benzos do.
  • Cognitive effect: Selank preserves or improves cognition. Benzos impair memory.
  • Tolerance: Selank tolerance development is minimal. Benzos build tolerance fast.
  • Withdrawal: No physical withdrawal from Selank. Benzos can have dangerous withdrawal.
  • Onset/duration: Selank slower onset but smoother. Benzos faster but spikier.

Selank isnt as acutely powerful as a benzo for a panic attack but is far better for chronic anxiety management.

Side effects of Selank

  • Mild nasal irritation – from the spray itself, fades with use
  • Slight headache – occasional, usually at first dose
  • Vivid dreams – reported by some users
  • Rare allergic reaction – any peptide can theoretically trigger this

Russian clinical trials consistently show very low side effect rates compared to anxiolytic medications. No reports of dependence, no withdrawal syndrome.

What does Selank cost?

  • 10 ml nasal spray bottle: $40-80 typically
  • Per dose cost: $0.50-2 depending on concentration
  • Monthly cost (typical use): $40-100

Is Selank legal in Canada?

Selank is not approved by Health Canada as a prescription medication. Its sold as a research peptide. Personal possession isnt criminalized but its not approved for clinical use either. Most users source from research peptide suppliers – quality control varies, so verify with COA.

Research peptide vial storage

How do you store Selank?

  • Unopened lyophilized: Refrigerated, stable for years
  • Reconstituted nasal spray: Refrigerated, use within 30 days
  • Bring to room temp before use for full bioavailability
  • Avoid heat and direct light

How is Selank made?

Selank is built from tuftsin (a 4-amino-acid sequence from the human IgG antibody) extended with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail. The tail makes it resistant to enzyme degradation. Standard solid-phase peptide synthesis. The structure is Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro.
